Here is an update on our route so far, compare our travels with the route we originally planned here

1. Africa

We started our journey in Africa as planned and broadly speaking it went as expected with only three ‘small’ diversions.

Firstly, as we were travelling during the COVID restrictions, we got stuck behind closed borders in Cote D’Ivoire and had to ship Henry out, sending him directly to South Africa.

Whilst we eventually managed to go back up the west coast and see Namibia and Angola, we missed out on eight other countries – Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon and the DRC – and the shipping held us up for about 6 weeks waiting for Henry arrive in Cape Town.

All a bit frustrating but not the worst thing that could have happened.

The worst thing that could have happened was diversion number two – rolling Henry down a mountain and smashing him into pieces. This stopped us from going into Mozambique but we had been ambivalent about that country anyway. It also held us up for 3 months and cost us most of our savings – but getting our hero back was worth every penny.

And diversion number three? Namibia, of course! We always said our travels might come to an abrupt halt in our beloved Namibia and they very nearly did. We spent ten months there in the end and nearly made it our permanent home. But right at the last minute the travelling bug won out and our itchy feet just would not let us commit…at least not yet.

Below is our actual route from the UK across Europe and through Africa, created from our daily satellite pings
